We have been preparing for state cheer for what seems like forever. We went to Nebraska Cheer Center in Lincoln this summer to help us with a routine for the competition. We decided to enter into the Tumbling division because we have some awesome senior leaders to help with our tumbling skills. Our captains Marlie Ruge and Alyana Newell helped our girls all year to get to the level of tumbling we had for state. The cheerleaders participated at the state cheer competition on Saturday February 22. We were able to bring home 2nd place in our division. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication of our ladies to our goal of participating in state this year. You ladies were amazing!

He will be moving from the High School Principal position, thus a search has begun to hire Mr. Zessin’s replacement. Wood River/Shelton junior high girls basketball finishes the year with a big win over Doniphan Trumbull and a Valentino’s pizza party! The girls learned a lot, we got better each game, and were very coachable and fun to be around. Hope to see all the 8th graders continue in their basketball careers next year in high school. Keep working hard in the off-season and us as coaches are very proud of you!

Wood River Student to Experience DC Close Up On May 30th, 2019, Wood River students and four sponsors will experience Washington D.C. and New York City, Close Up. The students will meet Congressional representatives, learn domestic and foreign policy Close Up. This year’s trip will mark the 27th trip to Washington D.C. and the 3rd trip to New York City for Wood River Rural Schools. Students will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience their government in action as part of the Wood River students’ week on the Close Up program. Close Up is designed for students all across America to travel to Washington D.C. to educate, experience and interact with hands on and up close learning. Wood River students this year as in the past along with students from all 50 States will take part in mock debates that focus on domestic issues. They will learn about foreign policy and how it impacts our everyday life. Setting up a mock congress and conducting a mock congress allows students the opportunity to learn exactly how congress functions. Once students understand congress, they will have a day to explore Capitol Hill. While on Capitol Hill, students will be able to personally talk about domestic issues, foreign policy and congressional issues with Nebraska Congressional representative Deb Fischer, Ben Sasse and Adrian Smith. Capitol Hill also will show students what freedoms the American constitution allows. While they are there, students will draw connections from the classroom experiences in Wood River to Washington D.C. Close Up program allows Wood River students to be inspired by the famous memorials and monuments in D.C. and reflect on their meaning and their representations to all of us. Daily workshop study groups challenged students to explore new meanings when seeing monuments as well as hearing what others had to say about their reflections. This year’s trip allows students to experience New York City. Students will learn about the culture and history. Students will travel to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. These landmarks were one of the first American sites that immigrants saw when coming over. The group will also visit Rockefeller Center and go to the “Top of the Rock” where numerous people from around the world visit. They also will visit the cultural districts of Little Italy, discover the excitement of staying in Times Square and take in the neon lights and brilliant marquees, before enjoying a Broadway show. I hope this trip will be an experience of a lifetime. I believe that the students get to really challenge themselves and become better individuals from going on Close Up.

From Brenda Hirchert about Student Council update: School Student Council is joining forces with The High School Lighthouse team to become one group this year. We are excited to combine the two leadership groups into one. This Lighthouse Team will be comprised of students in grades 6 - 12 and will meet at least once a month if not more. The primary goal of the group will be to give students a voice in three areas; School Academics, School Culture, and School Leadership. The students are looking forward to being able to make a difference in Wood River Rural Schools through being involved in our group and school. They will meet and form committees within the 3 areas of Academics, Culture, and Leadership. From those committees the students will create action plans on how to make improvements within our school and community. Each committee will be responsible for taking action on their goal and working with others to meet that goal. Once a goal is met, another will be made. They will continue to work together throughout the year in creating a school culture that is student led.
About Me - Joyce Willoughby Like most moms, I wear many different hats everyday. I’m a wife, mother, daughter, christian, assistant to Farmer John, bookkeeper, cook, driver, school board member and the list continues. And I would not change one thing in my past, because I love life. I was born and raised in Wood River. I grew up on a farm and today my husband John and I raise corn, seed corn, soybeans and milo. We have 4 daughters who have & will graduate from Wood River as I did in the 80’s. And yes, I wore bell bottom jeans and danced to Micheal Jackson’s “Thriller” album. My daughter, Megan is a 2nd grade teacher at Wood River Elementary, Amber works in the emergency room as a nurse in Omaha, Taylor is an oncology nurse in Kearney and Johnna is a senior at Wood River. My husband, John grew up in a town in Custer County called Mason City and graduated from the University of NE at Lincoln. I also graduated from UNL with a Business Administration- finance degree. I married in 1986 and lived in Lincoln until 1992 and then moved back to Wood River to take over the family farm. Best decision that John & I ever made was to move back to the farm to raise our kids. Being in a small town, means that no matter what life throws at you, you have family, friends & neighbors who always look out for you. That is why I try to give back to Wood River by volunteer at church, community and school. I’m on the Wood River Board of Education going on 17 years, a member of the Wood River Methodist Church and Booster club member. Life is fun and I hope you get to wear many hats in your life someday too.

My Story By Mr. Boucher I was born and raised in Burwell, NE and graduated from Burwell High School. I am the oldest of three and have 2 younger sisters. My father was an educator and coach for 37 years, all at Burwell. He coached track for 53 years. My mother was the County Assessor for Garfield and Greeley Counties for over 20 years. Both are now retired and living in Burwell. I started my teaching career at Brady ½ time and Maxwell ½ time. I taught 4 periods in the morning at Brady, jumped in my pickup with a sandwich to eat on the way, then taught 4 periods in the afternoon at Maxwell. For three years I was the Head Varsity and Junior High Football Coach at Maxwell, the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Brady and JH Boys and Girls Track Coach by myself and the Assistant Varsity Track Coach at Maxwell. It was a unique opportunity to coach against the same athletes I coached each year. Year 4 my friend and Maxwell Principal Randy Pierce died from a brain tumor. The school board asked me at that time to be the Head Teacher/Acting Principal and AD. So back to college I went to earn my Master’s Degree in School Administration. For 20 years I then served as Principal/AD at Maxwell Public School. In that time I also coached Boys Basketball for 10 years and Varsity Track for all 20 years. I married the love of my life and a Wood River Alum and we have two beautiful daughters. Brook the oldest, recently got married to Tannor Mroczek and currently is in her third year of Dental School at UNMC. Boston, our youngest, is currently a Junior at Wood River HS and keeps us active cheering her on in her many athletic events year round. Going forward I am excited to have one daughter off the payroll and looking forward to enjoying Boston’s last two years of high school. Looking forward to helping our Wood River Students achieve success. Glad to be a PURPLE EAGLE!
