Weekly events

Hello Wood River Families, I hope you have had a wonderful week. It has definitely been busy, and this week is no different. There are a number of state events, including FFA, but no school this Friday.

I want to thank everyone who filled out the early dismissal survey. Your feedback is invaluable. We received 82 responses: 57 (70%) supported, 14 (17%) were neutral, and 11 (13%) opposed.

A committee of teachers and principals met to review parent feedback and logistics. For this next school year, we recommended scaling back to a 1:00 p.m. dismissal on Wednesdays once per month during months without a full professional development day (October, November, December, March, April, and May).

* On these early dismissal days, we propose that buses will run at 1:00 p.m. (the same as the regular end-of-day routes).

* This approach gives teachers dedicated time to work in teams. During this time, teachers collaborate to ensure students at every grade receive a consistent, high-quality education. By sharing ideas and strategies, they can identify what works best for students, address learning gaps, and support each other's professional growth. This collaborative time directly benefits your child by strengthening teaching practices, and we have proposed a schedule to minimize disruption for families.

* Attempting weekly early dismissals created space and staffing challenges for supervising students who remained at school until the usual dismissal time.

How does this compare to nearby districts?

  • Northwest, Doniphan-Trumbull, and Gibbon Public Schools: Weekly 2:30 dismissals

  • Centura Public Schools: 1:45 dismissal about every 3 weeks

  • Central City Public Schools: 1:30 dismissal once a month

If you have any feedback regarding this schedule, please don’t hesitate to contact me at tzessin@wrrsd.org.
