The Wood River Rural Schools Board of Education invites district residents to attend a Community Facilities Planning & Feedback Meeting on June 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons Area at Wood River Rural High School. The regular Board of Education meeting will follow.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for community members to learn about facility and programming discussions currently underway and to offer input on potential future needs. One factor prompting these conversations has been the continued growth of student participation in activities and programs, including the addition and expansion of girls wrestling, which has increased demand for practice, training, and activity space across the district. Another factor prompting these discussions is the district's continued commitment to expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities and workforce readiness programs for students.

Over the past several years, the Board of Education and district leadership team have worked to expand opportunities for students through Career and Technical Education (CTE), workforce readiness initiatives, and programs designed to prepare students for success after high school. Recent efforts have included the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) opportunities, Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), and the development of a Profile of a Graduate focused on career readiness, industry-recognized credentials, and real-world learning experiences.

As our programs and activities continue to grow and evolve, the Board has been evaluating whether current district facilities align with the opportunities we want available for students in the future. Discussions have included Career and Technical Education space needs, the potential restoration and expansion of automotive and fabrication programming, student activity and wellness space, wrestling participation needs, and long-term facility planning.

Current district facilities have evolved over time and may no longer fully align with future programming needs. For example, the current weight room occupies a former automotive education area. The Board has discussed whether relocating the weight room could allow that space to once again support automotive and fabrication instruction while also adding a flexible space that can serve multiple student groups.

A key question facing the district is what investments will best support students over the next 10 to 20 years. As part of that discussion, the Board has begun reviewing financial feasibility and potential taxpayer impact while evaluating future opportunities and priorities. Throughout these discussions, Board members have emphasized the importance of maintaining affordability and exploring options that would minimize any potential levy impact while continuing to be responsible stewards of district resources.

No final decisions have been made. The purpose of the community meeting is to share information, answer questions, and gather feedback from community members before the Board considers any additional planning or design work.

Community members are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and share their thoughts as the district considers future programming and facility needs.
