Wood River Student to Experience DC Close Up On May 30th, 2019, Wood River students and four sponsors will experience Washington D.C. and New York City, Close Up. The students will meet Congressional representatives, learn domestic and foreign policy Close Up. This year’s trip will mark the 27th trip to Washington D.C. and the 3rd trip to New York City for Wood River Rural Schools. Students will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience their government in action as part of the Wood River students’ week on the Close Up program. Close Up is designed for students all across America to travel to Washington D.C. to educate, experience and interact with hands on and up close learning. Wood River students this year as in the past along with students from all 50 States will take part in mock debates that focus on domestic issues. They will learn about foreign policy and how it impacts our everyday life. Setting up a mock congress and conducting a mock congress allows students the opportunity to learn exactly how congress functions. Once students understand congress, they will have a day to explore Capitol Hill. While on Capitol Hill, students will be able to personally talk about domestic issues, foreign policy and congressional issues with Nebraska Congressional representative Deb Fischer, Ben Sasse and Adrian Smith. Capitol Hill also will show students what freedoms the American constitution allows. While they are there, students will draw connections from the classroom experiences in Wood River to Washington D.C. Close Up program allows Wood River students to be inspired by the famous memorials and monuments in D.C. and reflect on their meaning and their representations to all of us. Daily workshop study groups challenged students to explore new meanings when seeing monuments as well as hearing what others had to say about their reflections. This year’s trip allows students to experience New York City. Students will learn about the culture and history. Students will travel to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. These landmarks were one of the first American sites that immigrants saw when coming over. The group will also visit Rockefeller Center and go to the “Top of the Rock” where numerous people from around the world visit. They also will visit the cultural districts of Little Italy, discover the excitement of staying in Times Square and take in the neon lights and brilliant marquees, before enjoying a Broadway show. I hope this trip will be an experience of a lifetime. I believe that the students get to really challenge themselves and become better individuals from going on Close Up.
