Braille Challenge

The Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired (NCECBVI) recently hosted its annual statewide Braille Challenge, a friendly competition designed to strengthen braille literacy skills for students in grades 1–12. Developed by the Braille Institute, the challenge tests students in Speed and Accuracy, Proofreading, Spelling, Reading Comprehension, and Charts/Graphs, emphasizing skills essential for academic and career success.

Mykell Earl competed at the Junior Varsity level and earned a second-place finish. The Braille Challenge not only allows students to showcase their abilities, but also provides opportunities to build confidence, make new friends, and celebrate achievements in braille literacy. Great job!

The senior JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) class had the opportunity to hear a presentation from Emily Laudenklos with the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation & Grand Island Chamber of Commerce. The students learned about the purpose of the Chamber of Commerce, future job outlook in the area, and traits employers look for in applicants. Students also participated in a hands-on activity and drew their ideal Wood River before presenting their creation.
